In this paper, we examine the applicability of spatial optimization as a generative modelling technique for sustainable land-use allocation. Specifically, we test whether spatial optimization can be used to generate a number of compromise spatial alternatives that are both feasible and different from each other. We present a new spatial multiobjective optimization model, which encourages efficient utilization of urban space through infill development, compatibility of adjacent land uses, and defensible redevelopment. The model uses a density-based design constraint developed by the authors. The constraint imposes a predefined level of consistent neighbourhood development to promote contiguity and compactness of urban areas. First, the model is tested on a hypothetical example. Further, we demonstrate a real-world application of the model to land-use planning in Chelan, a small environmental amenity town in the north-central region of the State of Washington, USA. The results indicate that spatial optimization is a promising method for generating land-use alternatives for further consideration in spatial decision-making.

متن کاملSustainable Urban Land Use Allocation With Spatial Optimization
Sustainable urban form has been recognized as one of the major concerns of the planning practice. Current land use pattern trends with low-density, single-use, and leapfroging urban growth on city outskirts call for more efficient land use development strategies balancing economy, environmental protection, and social equity. In this paper, we present a new multiobjective spatial optimization mo...
متن کاملLAGA: A Software for Landscape Allocation using Genetic Algorithm
In this paper, Landscape Allocation using Genetic Algorithm (LAGA), a spatial multi-objective land use optimization software is introduced. The software helps in searching for optimal land use when multiple objectives such as suitability, area, cohesion and edge density indices are simultaneously involved. LAGA is a flexible and easy to use genetic algorithm-based software for optimizing the sp...
متن کاملUrban Land-Use Allocation By A Cell-based Multi-Objective Optimization Algorithm
Allocating urban land-uses to land-units with regard to different criteria and constraints is considered as a spatial multi-objective problem. Generating various urban land-use layouts with respect to defined objectives for urban land-use allocation can support urban planners in confirming appropriate layouts. Hence, in this research, a multi-objective optimization algorithm based on grid is pr...
متن کاملOptimization of Urban Budget Allocation Based on Spatial Justice Indicators (Case: Mashhad Metropolis)
Abstract: One of the main responsibilities of urban managers is to create justice in the area of fair and equal access of citizens to urban services. By objective realization of spatial justice concept, while providing the citizens with the appropriate services, the ground of reducing urban problems is prepared. Spatial justice is one of the main concepts of sustainable urban development. This ...
